A Health Project

Afya ya Mama Ni Maendeleo Kwa Taifa” project was set to target the quality and safety of PHCUs infrastructure and equipment complemented with adequate water, sanitation and hygiene amenities in order to provide community members, specially pregnant women, with adequate facilities and enabling environment that encourage pre-natal, delivery and post-natal services utilization to those most marginalized.

Overall Objective: to reduce maternal mortality in rural villages by ensuring that pregnant women have a safe, structured, well equipped and functioning health service centers that are within 10 kilometers from their residencies and which are served by competent health care providers.

Beneficiaries

Currently more than 40,000 community members have access to health services closer to their residencies, including thousands of women of childbearing age and children. Future interventions in health will benefit more than 80,000 people including nearly 20,000 women of reproductive age within 23 Shehias of Unguja and Pemba.

Key interventions

    ♦ Infrastructure support including Clinic blocks, Staff houses and WASH facilities, from 2014 to 2017  8 Clinics have been finalized with different levels of support.
♦ Strengthening Social Accountability for Health and engaging community for shared responsibility and action
♦ Promotion of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF)
♦ Promotion of water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH)
